Dubai is all set to ring in the New Year with a grand celebration, and the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has taken significant steps to ensure smooth transportation for residents and visitors alike. In a move to ease traffic congestion during the festivities, Dubai Metro and Tram services will operate nonstop for over 43 hours, while an additional fleet of 1,400 buses will be available to the public free of charge.
Metro and Tram Timings
The Dubai Metro’s Red and Green Lines will function continuously from 5:00 AM on December 31 until the end of January 1. Similarly, the Dubai Tram will operate from 6:00 AM on December 31 until 1:00 AM on January 2. This extended schedule aims to provide seamless connectivity across the emirate during the bustling New Year celebrations.
Hussain Al Bana, Executive Director of Traffic and Roads at the RTA, emphasized the importance of public transport during this period, urging commuters to rely on the metro to avoid road traffic. He noted that certain metro stations, including Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall, might be temporarily closed to manage crowd capacity, directing passengers to alternative stations such as Business Bay.
Free Bus Services
To complement the extended Metro and Tram services, the RTA has deployed a fleet of 1,400 buses to cover various parts of the city. These buses will operate free of charge, ensuring accessibility for residents and tourists. Al Bana highlighted that additional buses would be allocated to high-traffic areas as needed, with real-time monitoring to address congestion effectively.
Intelligent Traffic Management
In addition to enhanced public transport options, the RTA has rolled out advanced traffic management measures. Variable message boards and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) will provide live updates on road closures, alternative routes, and parking availability. Strategically placed signage will guide drivers to designated parking areas and bus pick-up points, further alleviating potential bottlenecks.
Parks and Entertainment Venues
Public parks in Dubai will remain open until 1:00 AM, offering a serene alternative for those who prefer a relaxed New Year’s Eve. Meanwhile, fireworks and drone shows will light up the night sky from 36 locations, including iconic spots such as Burj Park, Global Village, Bluewaters, and The Beach at JBR.
Adel Mohammed Al Marzouqi, Head of the Emergency and Crisis Team at Dubai Municipality, assured that all necessary measures are in place to accommodate the large crowds expected at these venues.
Plan Your Journey
With the RTA’s comprehensive transport plan, celebrating the New Year in Dubai has never been more convenient. Whether you’re heading to the dazzling fireworks at Burj Khalifa or enjoying family time at a park, leveraging public transport and adhering to real-time updates will ensure a hassle-free experience. Don’t forget to keep an eye on road signs and announcements to navigate the city smoothly during the festivities.
