Dubai is taking a significant step towards enhancing its road infrastructure with a groundbreaking project in Al Awir 1, designed to revolutionize traffic flow and bolster road safety. Spearheaded by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), this ambitious development promises to transform the commuting experience for residents and travelers alike.
A Roadmap to Better Connectivity
The Al Awir 1 project includes the construction of 16.5 kilometers of internal roads, aimed at improving access to key areas and reducing travel times. As part of this initiative, a new entrance from Emirates Road will be built, alongside intersections and roundabouts that will significantly enhance accessibility. Notably, a 4-kilometer lane extension on Emirates Road, stretching from Al Awir 1 to Sharjah, will increase the road’s capacity by 16%, easing congestion for thousands of daily commuters.
In addition, the project will establish 5 kilometers of internal roads within the Mohammed bin Rashid Housing Establishment residential project. A further 7.5-kilometer road will connect Emirates Road to Al Awir 1, featuring dual lanes in each direction, complete with intersections, roundabouts, and U-turns to optimize traffic flow.
Double the Capacity, Double the Convenience
One of the standout features of this development is its ability to double the capacity of access points in Al Awir 1. The upgraded entrances and exits will accommodate up to 3,000 vehicles per hour, a 100% increase from the current capacity of 1,500 vehicles per hour. These enhancements aim to alleviate traffic bottlenecks and create a seamless driving experience for residents in the area.
Supporting Dubai’s Growth Vision
The Al Awir 1 project aligns with Dubai’s vision to support urban and demographic growth while enhancing the quality of life for its residents. His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, emphasized the importance of this initiative in meeting the needs of a growing population. By integrating advanced infrastructure, including road networks and rainwater drainage systems, the project underscores Dubai’s commitment to smart, sustainable urban development.
Enhancing Residential Areas Across Dubai
The RTA is not stopping at Al Awir 1. Recent improvements in other residential areas, such as Al Warqa, Nadd Hessa, Wadi Al Safa 3, and Al Barsha South, highlight a city-wide push to upgrade infrastructure. These projects focus on creating direct entrances and exits, reducing travel times, and increasing road capacities to cater to Dubai’s fast-growing population.
For instance, Al Warqa has seen a reduction in travel times from 20 minutes to just 3.5 minutes, thanks to new access points and the conversion of roundabouts into signalized intersections. Similarly, enhancements in Al Barsha South have increased road capacity by 50%, streamlining traffic flow and reducing wait times.
