The 24th edition of the Dubai Marathon, held under the auspices of the Dubai Sports Council, reaffirmed its status as one of the region’s premier sporting events. Taking place on the scenic Umm Suqeim Street in Jumeirah, the race drew over 17,000 runners from across the globe, including elite international athletes and passionate amateurs. In a display of exceptional athleticism and determination, Ethiopian runners dominated both the men’s and women’s events, showcasing their nation’s remarkable prowess in long-distance running.
Ethiopian Sweep in Men’s Race
The men’s marathon witnessed an impressive debut victory for 23-year-old Bute Gemechu, who crossed the finish line in 2:04:50. Gemechu, participating in his first-ever marathon, broke away from the leading pack after the 35 km mark, leaving his competitors behind. Fellow Ethiopians Berehanu Tsegu and Shifera Tamru followed closely, finishing in 2:05:14 and 2:05:28, respectively. Gemechu’s triumph marks the fifth consecutive year a debutant has claimed the Dubai Marathon men’s title, further cementing the event’s reputation as a proving ground for emerging talent.
“I didn’t know what to expect in my first marathon, but at 36 km, I realized I could win,” Gemechu said, beaming after receiving his $80,000 winner’s cheque.
Dramatic Finish in Women’s Race
The women’s marathon was no less captivating, with Bedatu Hirpa clinching her biggest career victory in 2:18:27. In a nail-biting finish, Hirpa overtook defending champion Dera Dida, who clocked her personal best of 2:18:32 but finished second. Tigist Girma rounded off the Ethiopian clean sweep with a time of 2:20:47. Hirpa’s triumph, fueled by a late surge, highlighted her strategic prowess and determination.
“I owe this win to my coach, who believed in me,” Hirpa said, expressing her gratitude. She now has her sights set on the Boston Marathon as the next milestone in her career.
10K and Fun Run Add to the Excitement
The marathon also featured a competitive 10 km Road Race, where Morocco’s Yassir Ech Chaachoui emerged victorious with a time of 28:20 minutes. In the women’s category, Ethiopia’s Gemene Tunku claimed the title with 31:03 minutes, edging out compatriot Chaltu Diriba and Great Britain’s Eilish McColgan.
Beyond the elite races, the event’s 4 km Fun Run and 10 km Road Race attracted runners of all ages and abilities, contributing to the vibrant atmosphere that makes the Dubai Marathon a unique celebration of sport and community spirit.
A Star-Studded Presentation
The event culminated in a grand presentation ceremony attended by esteemed dignitaries, including His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council. Joining him were Vice Chairman Khalfan Belhoul and other senior officials, who lauded the participants for their dedication and determination.
