Jebel Ali Free Zone (Jafza) has taken a significant step towards sustainability by reducing its landfill waste by 37% in just nine months, thanks to a groundbreaking partnership with Imdaad. This collaboration reflects the UAE’s dedication to advancing a circular economy and reducing environmental impact.

Transforming Waste into Clean Energy

At the heart of this achievement lies an innovative Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) plant, developed under the FARZ joint venture between Jafza and Imdaad. Located at the National Industries Park in Jebel Ali, FARZ initially processed 1,200 tonnes of waste daily, reclaiming up to 15% as recyclables. The addition of the RDF facility has further enhanced its capacity, converting 150 tonnes of leftover waste into clean energy each day. This energy is used to fuel industrial furnaces, replacing traditional fossil fuels.

Impressive Results in Nine Months

Since its launch earlier this year, the RDF plant has delivered remarkable environmental benefits:

  • 37% landfill waste reduction
  • 312 million kWh renewable energy generated, sufficient to power thousands of homes
  • Over 201,000 trees saved, cutting CO2 emissions
  • 2.2 million cubic meters of landfill space conserved, easing environmental strain

These milestones underscore the initiative’s role in addressing climate change while supporting the UAE’s sustainability goals.

A Shared Vision for Sustainability

The FARZ initiative aligns with DP World’s strategy to embed sustainability across its operations. Abdullah Al Hashmi, COO of Parks & Zones at DP World GCC, highlighted the importance of transitioning to a circular economy, where waste is repurposed as a resource. “This partnership with Imdaad exemplifies our shared commitment to innovation and investment, setting benchmarks for environmental responsibility,” he stated.

Imdaad’s COO Mahmood Rasheed emphasized their dedication to transforming waste into valuable energy for industrial applications. “Our collaboration with Jafza and DP World is a testament to innovative solutions contributing to the UAE’s environmental and economic progress,” Rasheed added.

Vision 2026: Aiming for 80% Waste Diversion

Imdaad and Jafza aim to divert over 80% of waste from landfills by 2026, with FARZ playing a pivotal role in the region’s waste management system. The energy generated not only powers the RDF facility but is also supplied to various industrial applications, demonstrating the plant’s economic and environmental impact.

A Global Model of Sustainability

The UAE’s success with FARZ mirrors DP World’s international waste management efforts. In Brazil, the company employs a zero-waste strategy at Santos Port, while in Mexico, a partnership with Regenera transforms used tires into alternative fuels. These initiatives underline DP World’s global commitment to sustainable practices.

By reducing waste and generating renewable energy, the FARZ project is a beacon of innovation, fostering resilience in the UAE’s logistics sector and contributing to its vision of becoming a global leader in sustainable development.
