UAE Announces First Official Holiday of 2025: New Year’s Day for Private Sector Employees

he Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has declared that January 1, 2025, a Wednesday, will be an official paid holiday for all employees in the UAE’s private sector. The announcement sets the tone for the first public holiday of the year, ensuring a celebratory start to 2025.

This decision aligns with the UAE Cabinet’s resolution outlining the approved public holidays for both government and private sectors. Earlier, the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources also confirmed the same date as a public holiday for government employees.

Shorter Eid Al Fitr Break Among Key Holiday Highlights in 2025

Residents in the UAE can look forward to enjoying up to 13 public holidays in the upcoming year. However, a notable adjustment in 2025 is the shorter Eid Al Fitr holiday. Traditionally, this holiday spans several days, but next year, residents will receive up to four days off, covering the first three days of Shawwal, the month that follows Ramadan.

In comparison, the 2024 Eid Al Fitr break was much longer, with nine days off, including weekends. This change reflects a balanced approach to public holidays while maintaining opportunities for residents to celebrate significant occasions.

Flexibility in Holiday Scheduling

As per the Cabinet’s guidelines, most public holidays, except those tied to Eid, may be shifted to either the beginning or end of the week. However, if a holiday coincides with a weekend, it will not be moved to a weekday unless decided by the UAE Cabinet. Additionally, local governments in each Emirate retain the authority to declare extra holidays when necessary.

A Year to Plan Ahead

The announcement provides clarity for businesses and employees alike, offering a chance to plan well in advance for the New Year celebrations and other significant holidays in 2025. With the UAE’s robust approach to balancing work-life priorities, these public holidays contribute to the well-being and satisfaction of its diverse population.
