Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced a significant update to its Salik toll gate charges, introducing variable pricing starting January 31. This move is aimed at managing traffic flow more efficiently and encouraging the use of public transportation during peak hours. Here’s a detailed breakdown of what motorists can expect.
Peak and Off-Peak Salik Rates
Under the new system, toll rates will vary based on the time of day:
- Peak Hours (Weekdays): Dh6 from 6am to 10am and 4pm to 8pm.
- Off-Peak Hours (Weekdays): Dh4 from 10am to 4pm and 8pm to 1am.
- Sundays: A flat rate of Dh4 throughout the day, with toll-free passage from 1am to 6am.
The updated rates aim to reduce congestion during rush hours while maintaining affordability during less busy times.
Special Ramadan Rates
During Ramadan, toll timings will be adjusted to accommodate the Holy Month’s unique schedule:
- Peak Hours: Dh6 from 9am to 5pm.
- Off-Peak Hours: Dh4 from 7am to 9am and 5pm to 2am the following day.
- Free Hours: Toll-free from 2am to 7am daily.
These timings provide flexibility for residents observing Ramadan while managing traffic effectively.
New Toll Gates and Parking Policies
In November, Salik activated two new toll gates:
- Business Bay Crossing on Al Khail Road.
- Al Safa South on Sheikh Zayed Road.
This brings the total number of toll gates in Dubai to 10, covering key traffic hotspots. Additionally, a Variable Parking Tariff Policy will be introduced by March 2025, with premium spaces priced at Dh6 per hour during peak hours and Dh4 during off-peak hours. Parking will remain free overnight from 10pm to 8am and on Sundays.
For event areas, a Congestion Pricing Policy will impose Dh25 per hour for parking near venues like the Dubai World Trade Centre during major events starting February 2025.
Why Salik Matters
The Salik toll system, launched in 2007, plays a critical role in easing traffic congestion, generating state revenue, and encouraging the use of public transport. The new variable pricing structure is a step forward in aligning with Dubai’s vision for sustainable urban mobility.
Important Notes for Motorists
- Salik tags are mandatory for all vehicles. Failure to activate a tag within 10 days of vehicle purchase will result in fines starting from Dh100.
- Toll gates will continue to operate without a daily cap, meaning charges are incurred every time a vehicle passes through a gate.
With these updates, Dubai continues to innovate its road management strategies, ensuring a smoother and more efficient commute for its residents.
